Chakravyuh

Prakash Jha has always had an inclination for politics when it comes to his movies. Like every filmmaker he has attempted yet again to reflect realities of the various issues afflicting the society. Be it Damul or Aarakshan, his previous movies, Jha has exposed the significant political issues. The movie seems amateurish rather than being pragmatic and interesting. Chakravyuh is based on the Naxalite movement which focuses on the tribals conditions amidst the Naxals, the cops and politicians as well as the progress against displacement. Furthermore the story concentrates on the dispute between two friends due to the Naxals movement.

The story revolves around SP Adil Kha (Arjun Rampal) a cop and Kabir (Abhay Deol) a lively soul who are thick friends. Adil takes posting to a sensitive area constantly scanned by Naxalites where no cops would dare to go He has just arrested an old Naxal ideologue Govind Suryavanshi (Om Puri) and aims to catch the Naxal leader.  Kabir then joins him to penetrate the Naxalite movement to reach to the person behind the movement by becoming a Naxalite so that he can pass on the secrets to Adil. However the tables turn and Kabir being influenced by the Naxalites becomes the chief comrade.

Being an electronic expert he helps them by tracking radio frequencies and wins trust of Maoist head Rajan (Manoj Bajpayee), Juhi (Anjali Patil) and others. This creates distance between the friends and becomes a fight between the two. Set on a business-political background the story then brings Mahanta Steel (Kabir Bedi) a business tycoon who needs land for his project whereby the villagers have to evacuate from their homes. With support of the corrupt politicians he fulfils his aim. Adil and Kabir split, unit and diverge with the changing equations and keep us engrossed till the tragic end. Besides there is no love triangle but a colleague from college days (Esha Gupta) comes along in the movie.

Arjun Rampal surely amazed us with this new cop role. Abhay Deol fits into his role effortlessly and does a good job. Manoj Bajpayee is just apt for his part and Anjali Patil does a remarkable job. Esha Gupta is not that persuasive but Om Puri is brilliant. On the whole the cast is just perfect.

The movie script is not strong enough and could make an impact but failed to match the expectations caused with the hype.

Heroine

Heroine-an overdramatic, lengthy and dull script from Bhandarkar

After a remarkable run of movies from Chandani Bar, Page 3, Corporate to Fashion Madhur Bhandarkar comes yet again with his standard format of a female protagonist - “Heroine”. In this film he focuses on the film industry, in which he portrays how the heroine’s shelf life is shorter than their male co-stars who dominate the showbiz world.

The movie is based on the life and times of a heroine who has to constantly struggle to be a superstar in Bollywood. The movie is glamorous, scandalous and audacious but has a repetitive story which reflects what really goes on behind closed doors of makeup rooms and vanity vans. Where our country audience are fans of films and stars it gives a chance to see the real practical glamour world behind pretty faces, sweet smiles and politically correct statements.

Heroine is not very innovative but is more about the stunning wardrobe and edgy make up Kareena wears in the movie. Kareena stars as Mahi Arora, a superstar who is truly in love with a married actor (Arjun Rampal) and has a bipolar disorder. However, with his rejection she pops pills, takes psychiatric treatment, is addicted to alcohol but tries her best to recover her miserable state.

She then tries to retrieve her lost fame, by hiring a ruthless smarter than average PR agent (Divya Dutta) who helps her out of her shambled life. A new romance develops between her and the cocky cricketer (Randeep Hooda). However, she tries to regain her stardom with a role with the top actor but fails to in the disgraceful attitudes of co-stars. She learns the ropes of real acting from a Bengali filmmaker and actress but to no avail.
Helen, who is an old superstar, gives us the moral of the story: that selling your soul for the glitter of glamour will always end badly. Kareena gives her best to give Mahi profundity. She looks marvellous and yet is bold enough to risk being ugly literally and figuratively. After a certain point the movie seems lengthy with the constant scandals, jibes, conflicts, sleaze, alcohol and drugs.

At some point during the film, Mahi asks the mirror a life-asserting question, “Kya main achchi actress hoon?” Though the mirror won’t respond but as lifeless objects don’t speak, silence speaks louder than words.

Bhandarkar’s storytelling desperately needs more creativity and reinventing as he loses grip on the script.

Makkhi - New Hindi Bollywood Movie

Makkhi – a bizarre yet amusing love story you won’t want to miss

Director SS Rajamouli has inscribed a very absurd yet amusing story where logic and fantasy are entwined with some great visualisation, wild imagination and computer graphics. Unlike the conventional love stories, Makkhi is a total entertainer with a different plot. In spite of having the clichéd commercial cinema material this one stands out to be special. It is a Hindi dubbed version of the blockbuster Telgu film Eega.

The movie commences just like the other films unfold with a blank screen and a bedtime story narrated by a father (Ajay Devgan’s voice) to his daughter. The story kicks off with, “Once upon a time there was a fly..” The protagonist Jani (Nani) is madly in love with his colleague Bindu (Samabtha Ruth Prabhu).  Like any typical heroine she takes him for granted and pays no heed to him. Enters Sudeep, the villain – a hot and bad guy who is a business tycoon.  He tries his best to win Bindu with his bank balance and smart personality but fails to impress her. Soon he realises that Jani is also in love with her. Sudeep kills Jani ruthlessly stamping him under his feet and feels his heartbeat come to a stop.

Jani’s soul is reincarnated as a fly whereby he aims to protect his love and take revenge from Sudeep.  The fun and adventure of Makkhi begins as he flaps his wings in wrath and his expressions are not like the characters you would see in animated movies like A Bug’s Life but we see so much personality in the insect with his tiny body, large eyes and lanky limbs. As Makkhi drives Sudeep crazy, he reminds us of the comic book super heroes in a dubious and hilarious way. Moreover, Bindu, a micro-artist in the film supports him by equipping this little creature with iron claws, masks and dumbbells of minute size that would help him become physically powerful to get his revenge. One can feel the characteristics of Jani evidently in the tiny creature. Makkhi is modest and one roots for his character. A wonderful instance of the characters and the idea is truly superb.

The movie gets a tad bit repetitive towards the end but it quite effortlessly is a complete entertainer with Rajamouli’s spark of brilliance in a love story. Makkhi is a very outlandish story but a must watch for those creative minds, kids and adults too.

Ileana D’Cruz

Ileana D’Cruz  : Bollywood’s starry debutante

B-town’s newest sensation Ileana D’Cruz makes a mark in the film industry with a debut in Barfi. Known as the glamorous South Indian beauty, she took a big step to venture in an extraordinary movie with a very distinctive role opposite bold actors like Ranbir and Priyanka.

Ileana’s portrays the character where in the first half she shines with a wordless romance with Barfi and the second half as girl who helps the guy she is in love with to find his true love. Shot in the scenic beauty of Darjeeling, the bike rides, silent kiss and character of married girl heartbroken, Ileana makes an impression.

Being a debutante she took such an unconventional role and managed to win the hearts of the viewers not only with her charming features but also with a remarkable balanced performance. The actress reveals “I have never chalked a path for myself; instead I feel that I have just walked down the road planned by my destiny. So far it’s always been the right one and I am waiting to see where it takes me next. I’m just taking it all step by step.”

She determined to shun the glamorous avatar opposite a big celeb like Salman and others previously and instead took a gamble to enter Bollywood with an exceptional film Barfi, which is now the biggest hit with a nomination for the Oscars.

Ileana not only awed the audiences but is also being showered with words of praise from directors, actors and film critics across the industry. And now that she has impressed the people, she has bagged two more films with the production house that made Barfi.

The actress shares that she aspires to work on such interesting roles with something more substantial where people appreciate her as an actor.

With no big names from bollywood in the movie, Karan Johar roped three debutantes making it all the more exhilarating. The bollywood movie has a higher budget than Karan Johar’s debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (KKHH) but on par with Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (KHKG)

The film follows lines of the famous American TV based musical show Glee. However, student of the year uses the theme of music for its backdrop and doesn’t have the plot progressing through musical numbers.
Based on the paradigm of the competitive era, the movie has been named student of the year. Unlike Kjo’s previous movies this will be one of his shortest which is just a little over two hours.

A romantic comedy based on school life with new faces in bollywood industry, student of the year is a long awaited movie for youngsters. KJo aspires to make this the most glamorous movie with groovy and addictive tracks.
